What owners wish they had known before cleaning their patio or driveway
The surprises after a patio or driveway clean are predictable: some old stains leave a shadow, moss returns where the damp stays, block paving joints may need refilling, and faded colour does not come back with water. Knowing these in advance turns a disappointment into a planned decision.
Send us a photo and the m²Why does a clean sometimes reveal more problems?
A clean reveals more problems because dirt and growth hide them. Fine cracks, chipped edges, open joints and bleached colour all become easier to see once the surface is clean.
That can feel like the clean made things worse, but it has only shown the real condition. It is useful information: you now know whether the surface just needed a wash or also needs repair.

Why did the old oil stain not disappear completely?
Old oil stains often leave a shadow because the oil has soaked deep into porous concrete, sometimes topped up by the same car for a long time. Treatment draws much of it out, but not always all.
The fair way to handle this is to set expectations before the job, from close-up photos. If a shadow remains and bothers you, a recolour after treatment covers it. Our guide on oil stains on concrete explains why.
Why is the moss already coming back?
Moss comes back because the conditions that fed it are unchanged: shade, damp, irrigation overspray, leaf litter and poor drainage. Cleaning removes the growth, not the cause.
- Point sprinklers at beds, not paving.
- Clear gutters and downpipes that discharge onto paths.
- Trim plants that keep a surface permanently shaded.
- Sweep organic debris regularly, especially in shaded corners.
Our rust, mould and moss page explains how we deal with growth and what we notice on site that you may want to change.
Why do the joints in my block paving look emptier?
Joints look emptier because moss and weeds come out with some of the sand their roots were holding. A careful clean keeps the loss low but cannot avoid it entirely.
Whether refilling is needed depends on how much was lost; it can be part of the repair stage. The block paving cleaning service explains how joints are protected and checked.

Why is my patio clean but still pale?
A clean patio that is still pale is faded, not dirty. Sun and wear have taken colour out of the surface, and water cannot put it back.
If you want the deep colour back, the route is a recolour: clean, repair cracks and small holes, cut in edges by brush, then two coats of synthetic resin paint. The article on cleaning versus recolouring explains how to tell in advance which situation you are in.
Owners who bought a resale villa are often caught out here, because they never saw the surface new and assumed its pale tone was dirt. A small wetted patch, photographed next to a dry one, usually settles the question before anyone spends money.
What else is worth knowing in advance?
A few practical points come up again and again after the event.
- Cleaning one area makes the neighbouring uncleaned areas look worse.
- Wash water has to go somewhere; drains, pools and neighbours need thinking about.
- Peeling paint will lift during a clean whether you want it to or not.
- Wet surfaces can be slippery during and just after the work.
- Timing matters for rentals; plan the clean between guest stays.
None of these are reasons not to clean; they are reasons to plan. For the standard clean, see the patio and driveway cleaning page.
How can you avoid these surprises?
You avoid surprises by asking the right questions before booking and by giving the contractor good photos. A short, honest assessment in advance is worth more than a promise of perfect results.
Our checklist for choosing a pressure washing company lists the questions to ask, whoever you hire.
It also helps to write down what bothers you most about the surface, in order. When the contractor knows that the oil patch by the garage matters more to you than the faint marks on the terrace, the quote and the work can be shaped around your priorities.
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for a clean to show cracks?
Yes. Dirt and growth often hide fine cracks and chipped edges. Seeing them after cleaning is normal and useful, because they can then be repaired before they get worse or before any recolour. Photos of what was revealed help you plan the next step.
Why did nobody tell me the stain would stay?
A good contractor should set expectations from close-up photos before the job. If you are getting quotes, ask directly what outcome is expected for each stain. An honest answer before the job prevents disappointment afterwards. If it is not offered, ask.
Can moss be stopped from coming back?
It can be slowed by changing the conditions: less shade, less damp, irrigation kept off the paving and regular sweeping. Cleaning alone does not stop it returning. A clean can be combined with a few small changes around the garden.
Do I have to refill joints after every clean?
Not necessarily. It depends on how much material came out and how loose the joints were. Some cleans need no refilling; others benefit from it. We check the joints after every clean and tell you what we see. Refilling is quoted separately if it is needed.
Can a pale patio be made darker by cleaning more?
No. If the colour has faded, more pressure only risks damaging the surface. A recolour is what brings back depth and evenness. Pushing harder risks etching or scouring the surface. The wetted-patch test is a quick way to check in advance.
Why does my clean driveway make the terrace look dirty?
Because the contrast is now obvious. Including neighbouring areas in the same visit avoids this. The terrace has not changed; your eye now has a clean reference next to it. Planning the scope at the quote stage avoids that effect.
Will peeling paint come off during cleaning?
Loose paint usually lifts during a clean. If you want to keep it, tell us so we can use gentler settings; if not, see our old paint removal service. Telling us your preference in advance avoids surprises. Flakes are collected.
Do I need to warn my neighbours?
It is a good idea if their wall, car or garden is close to the area. Spray and fine debris can travel, and a quick word avoids misunderstandings. Closing nearby windows also helps. If their wall is right next to the area, we can agree the timing with them.
What should I ask before booking?
Ask what the clean will and will not achieve, how stains will be treated, how joints and coatings will be protected, and where the water and residues will go. Also ask what is excluded and what happens if something unexpected appears.
Is it better to clean before or after the summer?
It depends on your use of the property. If you let the property, cleaning before the season makes sense; otherwise after can work better, when leaves and summer use have left their mark. There is no single right answer. Plan around your bookings or your own visits.
