Moss on the patio, algae on the pool deck and rust stains on concrete: removal in Malaga
We remove moss, mould, black algae and verdín from patios, paths, driveways and pool decks, and we treat orange rust stains that water alone will not shift. Organic growth comes off with a well-judged wash; rust needs a targeted treatment, and we tell you from your photos which one you are dealing with.
Send us a photo and the m²Why does moss grow on patios and paths on the Costa del Sol?
Moss and algae grow wherever a hard surface stays damp and shaded for long enough. On a sunny coast that sounds unlikely, but every villa has its north side, its pergola, its corner under the trees and its path next to an irrigated bed.
Porous materials such as block paving, natural stone and unsealed concrete hold water in the surface and in the joints, which gives spores a foothold. Garden irrigation that overshoots onto the paving and gutters that drip onto the same spot make it worse.

Growth is more than a cosmetic problem. A green film on a path or steps can become slippery when wet, and roots in the joints slowly push paving units apart.
What is the difference between moss, mould, verdín and black algae?
Owners use these words loosely, and for cleaning purposes the difference matters less than where the growth sits and how deep it goes.
- Moss forms soft green cushions, mostly in joints and on rough or shaded surfaces.
- Verdín is the thin green film that covers damp paving and walls; the Spanish word is widely used on the coast.
- Black algae and dark mould show as black or grey spots and streaks, typical on pool decks and on slabs in deep shade.
- Lichen forms flat, crusty patches that cling tightly and can leave a mark after removal.
Surface films usually lift fully. Growth that has rooted into the pores of soft stone or old concrete may leave a faint discolouration after the clean.
How do we remove moss and algae from a pool deck or terrace?
We remove organic growth with a pressure wash set for the material, working joint lines and edges carefully, and use a targeted treatment on heavy or deep-rooted growth where it is agreed in advance.

Around pools we plan the direction of work so that wash water and debris do not end up in the pool. On block paving, the moss in the joints comes out along with some of the sand, and our block paving cleaning service explains how we limit that loss.
The guide on rust, moss and black algae covers why some surfaces go green again faster than others, and what you can change around the property to slow it down.
Can rust stains on concrete be removed?
Rust stains can often be lightened a great deal or removed, but rarely with water alone. Rust is iron oxide bonded into the surface, so it needs a treatment that acts on it chemically before the wash rinses it away.
| Typical source | What the mark looks like |
|---|---|
| Metal garden furniture and plant stands | Rings and spots where legs stood |
| Railings, gates and their fixings | Streaks running down from the base |
| Irrigation water with iron content | Orange tide marks where sprinklers hit |
| Granular fertiliser left on paving | Scattered small orange dots |
| Steel reinforcement close to the surface | Rust bleeding from a crack or a spall |
The last case in the table is different from the others. Rust coming out of the concrete itself points to steel corroding inside, which is a repair matter rather than a cleaning one; our sister site on spalling concrete explains that situation.
Will the moss and rust come back after cleaning?
Moss and algae come back wherever the damp and shade that fed them remain. Rust comes back if the metal object that caused it goes back onto the same spot.
During the clean we can see where water collects, where irrigation reaches the paving and which corners never get sun. We tell you what we noticed so you can decide whether to change anything, such as redirecting a sprinkler or adding feet pads under metal furniture.
On surfaces that are also faded or cracked, the clean can be the start of a renovation: repairs, edge cut-in and two coats of synthetic resin paint. A coated surface is less porous than bare concrete, and the cleaning or recolouring article helps you decide whether that route makes sense.
How do you get a quote for moss or rust removal?
Send a wide daylight photo of each area, a close-up of the worst growth or rust mark and an approximate area in square metres. Tell us whether there is a pool next to the area and whether the surface has ever been painted or sealed.
The price depends on the area, how thick and how widespread the growth is, the number of rust marks and the access. You will find orientative figures on the partner page for pressure washing cost, and our general patio and driveway cleaning page shows what a standard clean includes.
Frequently asked questions
Do you remove moss from driveways in Marbella and Benahavís?
Yes. We clean moss and verdín from driveways, paths and terraces around Marbella, Benahavís, Estepona and the rest of the coast. Shaded drives under trees and in valleys are included too. Send photos and the approximate area for a quote.
Can you clean algae off the pool deck while guests are staying?
We prefer to work when the pool area is not in use, because the deck is wet and access needs to be clear. For rentals we schedule between stays where possible. Tell us your booking calendar and we will look for a suitable gap.
Is moss on my patio dangerous?
Moss and algae can make paving slippery, especially on steps, slopes and around pools. That is often the main reason owners ask for a clean. Removing the growth reduces the slippery film, although some materials remain slippery when wet by their nature.
Why are there black spots on my patio?
Black spots on patios are usually algae, mould or lichen that thrive in damp, shaded areas, although sometimes they are old stains or chewing gum. A close-up photo usually tells us which. Organic spots generally lift with cleaning; deeper marks may leave a faint trace.
Can you remove rust marks left by garden furniture?
Usually yes, with a targeted rust treatment followed by a wash. Old or heavy marks on very porous surfaces may fade rather than vanish. On coloured or sealed surfaces we test first, because treatment can affect the surrounding finish. Raising the furniture on pads helps.
Do you remove moss from imprinted concrete?
Yes. Moss on stamped concrete tends to settle in the textured pattern and in shaded areas. We clean it at settings that respect what is left of the sealer. If the concrete underneath is faded, we tell you, so you can decide whether a recolour is worth adding.
What causes orange stains near my sprinklers?
Orange tide marks where irrigation reaches the paving are often caused by iron in the water or in the irrigation system. They need a rust-type treatment rather than plain washing, and they will return unless the sprinkler is adjusted to keep water off the paving.
Do you treat mould on garage ramps and carports?
Yes. Ramps and carports with poor drainage or permanent shade often develop a green or black film that becomes slippery. We clean it with settings suited to the surface and, for communal ramps, coordinate the timing with the administrator. Poor drainage is noted for you.
Can rust come from inside the concrete?
Yes. If rust bleeds from a crack or a spalled area, steel reinforcement inside may be corroding. That is not a cleaning issue: it needs assessment and repair, and structural questions should go to a qualified professional. We will tell you if we see this.
Will you remove the weeds between my paving stones?
The wash removes most weeds and moss from the joints. It does not kill seeds that land later, so growth can return. We do not recommend weedkillers by name; if the joints are left open, refilling them can be discussed as part of the repair stage.
