Oil stains on concrete driveways: what comes out and what stays
Whether an oil stain comes out of concrete depends on how deep the oil has travelled, how long it has been there and how porous or sealed the surface was. Fresh drips on a sealed surface often lift almost completely; old, repeatedly topped-up stains on bare concrete usually fade but leave a shadow.
Send us a photo and the m²What actually happens when oil drips on a driveway?
When oil drips on a driveway, it spreads across the surface and then sinks into the pores and fine cracks of the concrete or paving. Within a short time most of it is inside the material rather than on top of it.
The darker the stain looks, the more oil there usually is in the top layer. Repeated drips from the same car push it deeper and wider, which is why the patch under a regular parking spot is often the hardest to treat.
Sealed imprinted concrete slows this down, because the sealer closes many of the pores. Bare plain concrete and block paving absorb oil much faster.
Which factors decide whether a stain comes out?
Four factors decide most of the outcome: age, quantity, porosity and the condition of any sealer or coating.
| Factor | Better chance | Lower chance |
|---|---|---|
| Age | Recent drip | Stain left for a long time |
| Quantity | Occasional small drips | Repeated leaks in the same spot |
| Porosity | Dense, smooth surface | Open, rough or worn concrete |
| Sealer or coating | Intact sealer | No sealer, or failing coating |
Heat also plays a part. On an open driveway in strong sun, oil residue can turn tacky and darker, and some of it may bond more firmly to the surface.

Why does a pressure washer alone not remove oil?
A pressure washer alone does not remove absorbed oil because water and oil do not mix; the jet cleans the dirt around and on top of the stain but leaves the oil in the pores. The result is often a sharper, more visible dark patch on an otherwise clean driveway.
A professional approach uses a targeted treatment to loosen and draw out the oil first, and then cleans the treated area together with its surroundings so the colour blends. Our oil stain removal service explains the two-stage method.
How can an oil stain be assessed from a photo?
An oil stain can be assessed reasonably well from a sharp close-up taken in daylight, together with a wider shot that shows the stain in relation to the rest of the surface.
- Edge sharpness: a crisp edge suggests a recent or a surface stain; a blurred halo suggests oil that has spread inside the material.
- Sheen: a glossy or tacky look means oil still near the surface, which often responds better.
- Surface around it: worn, open concrete absorbs more than a smooth or sealed finish.
- Pattern: a single drip line points to one vehicle; overlapping patches point to years of parking in the same place.
- Coating: paint or sealer lifting around the stain changes the approach entirely.
Photos cannot show depth, so the final view is formed on site. What a photo assessment does is set expectations early, which is better for both sides than discovering the limits halfway through the job.
If you are sending pictures, include something for scale, such as a shoe or a coin, and take one shot from standing height and one from close up.
What does a remaining shadow mean?
A remaining shadow means that some oil, or a discolouration it caused, is still in the surface after treatment. It is usually lighter and less sharp than the original stain, but it can still be visible in certain light.
A shadow is not a sign that the job was skipped. It is the limit of what can be drawn out of that particular concrete. An honest assessment before the job should already have warned you that this was likely.
If a shadow bothers you, the options are to live with it, to repeat a treatment once where that might help, or to recolour the surface after cleaning and treatment. Recolouring hides the shadow, but only works if the oil has been dealt with first.
Can you paint over an oil stain?
You should not paint over an untreated oil stain, because oil left in the pores can stop the new coating bonding and may lead to peeling in exactly that spot.
In our renovations, oil treatment and cleaning come first, then crack repair, edge cut-in and two coats of synthetic resin paint. The same logic applies when an old coating has failed over oil: see old paint removal and the guide on removing old paint from outdoor concrete.

What about oil in communal garages and wash water?
In communal garages, oil is concentrated in each bay and along the ramp, and many residents' cars contribute. The treatment principles are the same, organised zone by zone; see our communal garage cleaning service.
Oily wash water should not be sent into the sewer. Málaga city's sanitation regulation, the Reglamento del Servicio de Saneamiento, bans discharging the substances listed in its Annex 1, which include water-immiscible organic solvents and volatile oils. Rules for other municipalities have not been verified (to be verified); ask your ayuntamiento.
The guide on wash water and residues covers the regulations we have checked in more detail.
Frequently asked questions
Can every oil stain be removed from concrete?
No. Many can be lightened a great deal, and fresh stains on sealed surfaces often lift almost completely. Old, deep stains on porous concrete frequently leave a shadow. An honest assessment from close-up photos should tell you which case you have before you pay for anything.
Does the colour of the stain tell you anything?
Darker, sharper stains usually mean more oil in the top layer. Brownish halos around a stain often show oil that has spread sideways. Very old stains may turn greyish and dull. These clues help, but a close-up photo and an on-site check are more reliable.
Is imprinted concrete easier to clean than plain concrete?
Often yes, because the sealer on imprinted concrete slows absorption. That only holds while the sealer is intact. On old imprinted concrete with worn sealer, oil behaves much as it would on bare concrete. A wetted test spot shows quickly how much the sealer is still repelling liquids.
Why does the stain look worse after a DIY wash?
Because water cleaned the dirt around the stain but not the oil in it, so the contrast increased. That is a common experience and not a sign that the stain spread. It simply shows that water alone does not remove absorbed oil.
Can oil stains come back after cleaning?
Sometimes oil deeper in the concrete migrates back towards the surface after treatment, especially with heat, and a faint mark reappears. A second treatment can help in such cases. New drips from the same vehicle are, of course, the most common reason.
Do brake fluid and coolant stain the same way?
Different car fluids behave differently; some are oily, others are water-based and may discolour rather than soak in. If you know what leaked, tell us when you send photos, because it helps us judge what to expect. Water-based fluids sometimes leave a pale ring rather than a dark patch.
Should I put sand or cat litter on a fresh spill?
We do not give DIY instructions, but soaking up as much fresh liquid as possible before it sinks in generally makes later cleaning easier. Collect and dispose of the absorbed material properly rather than washing it into a drain. Never hose a fresh spill away, since that spreads it.
Does a remaining shadow mean the surface is damaged?
Not usually. A shadow is a discolouration, not structural damage. It can be covered by a recolour once the oil has been treated, if the look bothers you. It does mean some discolouration is locked into the top layer of the material.
Can oil stains stop a new coating from sticking?
Yes. Oil left in the pores is one of the common reasons coatings fail in parking spots. That is why stain treatment and cleaning always come before any repair or recolour in our work. Even a well-applied coat cannot compensate for oil left underneath it.
Is oily wash water allowed into the drains?
In Málaga city, the sanitation regulation bans discharging several oily and solvent-type substances into the sewer. Rules for other towns have not been verified, so ask your ayuntamiento. We plan how wash water is handled during the assessment. That way the plan fits the drainage on your plot.
